Is Italy’s Small Town Mini Skirt Ban Going a Little Overboard?

Quick Facts:
- The mini skirt ban is taking place in a seaside town in southern Italy, Castellammare di Stabia
- The town has a population of around 65,000 people
- Fines for offenders will vary from 30 to 500 Euro
- Also includes low hung (low cut) jeans

So, recently the Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of Italy decided to give mayors around the country, more power to fight crime and confront anti social behavior reports BBC Europe. This has led this mayor from Castellammare di Stabia, Luigi Bobbio to plan a ban on mini skirts and low cut jeans in the town.

A fight against crime and indecency?
It might be true over the past few decades that skirts have begun to crawl up the thighs in length and that more skin is revealed than ever, but banning mini skirts altogether? I think this is going a little too far, everyone should have the right to wear whatever he or she wishes.

I have to admit, there may be cultural differences, but Italy is well known for their beautiful women and men. And throughout the world, small towns are usually more conservative so in this scenario it may or may not be treated in a very negative manner. If this were to happen say in Milan or London, it’d probably be a bigger deal. I know I’d be outraged without mini skirts and I’m a guy.

With the new powers that were provided by the Italian Prime Minister, other mayors have already implemented some interesting bans. These include kissing in cars, using lawn mowers on the weekends, and building sandcastles. I must say, building a sandcastle I understand, that’s extremely indecent, really. But I’m rather guilty of the first two, I guess I’d be paying more than my monthly rent for the fines that I’ll be racking up if I were to live in Italy. I mean I’m sure everyone loves to mow his or her lawn after coming home after a long day of work.

Seriously, what is this world coming to?
At this rate, we won’t be allowed to make eye contact with opposite sexes or buy ice cream in public. Bans usually lead to people wanting to do something more because it seems more adventurous and dangerous. Smoking is indecent and unhealthy but isn’t banned. Oh right, it makes a lot of money for the government, and money always comes first. That’s why a lot of things like human rights and the environment are always brushed aside indefinitely.
