2010 World Series Baseball: Texas Rangers vs. San Francisco Giants Prediction

It’s that time of year again. This year’s Mr. October will be chosen and given the MVP within the next two weeks. More importantly, the Texas Rangers have a chance to get their first ever pennant in their 50-year history. The favorites to win, the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies are gone, it’s all up to the underdogs to take advantage of this great opportunity given to them.

The Rangers seemed like the Underdogs if you only looked at the payrolls. The Yankees roster was sitting at $260 million while the “Underdog” Rangers are at $55 million. Alex Rodriguez alone made $33 million this past year, easily over half of the entire Texas Rangers roster. Was he worth it? You be the one to decide, I think you can tell where I stand.

Going into the World Series the Rangers are the favorites to win. That’s a compliment considering the franchise had never won a home game in the playoffs, never mind a playoff series. Having said that, the Giants definitely have a great chance to win. They have momentum on their side and being the dark horses of the MLB this year, anything can happen. They also have outstanding pitchers like Tim Lincecum, and outdueled the great pitching that Philadelphia had. Most analysts expected Philadelphia to embarrass the Giants, well that didn’t happen.

Texas has the bigger names. Cliff Lee, Vladimir Guerrero, Michael Young, and Josh Hamilton. They have the stars that their teammates can rely on. On the other hand, San Francisco doesn`t really have any batting superstars. Having such a lineup will put pressure on the Bruce Bochy and their coaching staff to pull all the right moves if the Giants are to have a solid chance.

Another fact of note is that the National League, and therefore the Giants, has home field advantage. The first and last two games will be played in San Francisco while the middle three will be in Texas. I almost think this is an advantage for the team that gets the three games in the middle. If Texas can win either of the first two games in San Francisco, they will be looking great going back to Texas. They have a huge chance with Cliff Lee pitching Game 1 with a 7-0, 1.25 ERA in his postseason career.

My prediction: the Rangers in 6.
